In 2001, Ansley Johnson, a 13-year-old from Garner, NC, had the vision to recreate the beloved SnoBalls treat from her annual visits to Chalmette, Louisiana. Pelican’s Snoballs was born from these cherished memories, with the business named after the state bird and Ansley's favorite nostalgic treat. While the true origin of the SnoBalls is still debated, for this blog post, we proudly claim Louisiana as its birthplace.

In November 2022, Tracy and Frankie Lawrence fearlessly opened their own location in the heart of Loganville, GA. Despite the risk of starting in the middle of winter, their bold move paid off, and now, two years later, they have a thriving year-round business. SnoBalls or Snowcone?

The difference is in the ice.

You might be wondering about the difference between a SnoBalls and a snowcone and what makes Pelican’s SnoBalls special. Both are frozen treats made from ice and flavored syrup. The key difference lies in the ice. A traditional snowcone is made from finely crushed ice, giving it a coarse texture. The ice is packed into a paper cone and then topped with flavor syrup. However, the syrup doesn't always soak into the ice effectively. As the ice melts, the flavor can become bland and watered-down.
